How Often Are Inspections Required in Missouri?
Missouri requires all registered motor vehicles to pass a safety inspection once per year. Your inspection sticker must be current at all times — expired stickers can result in a moving violation and fine.
Newly purchased vehicles must be inspected within 30 days of purchase or before the temporary tag expires, whichever comes first. If you move to Missouri from another state, your vehicle must be inspected before you can register it here.
What's Checked During a Missouri Safety Inspection
Brakes
Brake pads, rotors, drums, lines, and emergency brake function are all tested for proper operation and safe stopping distance.
Steering & Suspension
Tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, shocks, and struts are inspected for wear, play, and proper function.
Lights & Electrical
All exterior lights — headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards — must be fully operational.
Horn
The horn must be audible and in proper working condition.
Windshield & Wipers
The windshield must be free of cracks or damage that obstructs the driver's view. Wipers must clear the windshield effectively.
Mirrors
Rearview and side mirrors must be present, properly mounted, and provide adequate visibility.
Tires
Tires are checked for minimum tread depth, sidewall damage, and proper inflation.
Exhaust System
The exhaust system is inspected for leaks, damage, and proper routing — especially important for preventing dangerous carbon monoxide exposure inside the vehicle.
Fuel System
Fuel lines and connections are checked for leaks or damage that could pose a fire hazard.
Seat Belts
All seat belts must latch, retract, and function properly for every seating position.
Why Inspections Matter
A vehicle inspection isn't just a legal requirement — it's a critical safety checkpoint. Many serious accidents are caused by mechanical failures that could have been caught and corrected during a routine inspection. Worn brakes, failing suspension, cracked windshields, and burned-out lights all increase your risk on the road.
Regular inspections also help you catch small problems before they become expensive repairs. A failing tie rod or a brake line showing wear is far cheaper to fix before it fails than after an accident.
Signs Your Vehicle May Not Pass
Brake warning light is on or brakes feel soft, grinding, or pulling
Any exterior lights are burned out or not functioning
Tires are worn below 2/32" tread depth or have visible sidewall damage
Windshield has a crack in the driver's line of sight
Exhaust is loud, smoking, or has a noticeable leak
Steering feels loose, pulls to one side, or has excessive play
